Australian school bans cartwheels

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — A school in northern Australia will review a ban on cartwheels, handstands and other gymnastic tumbles in the playground after a community backlash, the state education department said Wednesday.

Belgian Gardens State School in Townsville, Queensland, recently banned all unsupervised gymnastic activities outdoors in what it called an effort to protect students from injury.

The policy became nationwide news Tuesday when a parent complained to the Townsville Bulletin newspaper.

Kylie Buschgens said her 10-year-old daughter had been punished for doing cartwheels, even on the grass, after students were told of the ban at a recent assembly. She told the newspaper that her daughter and other students now "sit around and do nothing" during recess and lunch breaks because they are not interested in other sports.

This may seem really stupid, but there are tons of preventable problems associated with adulthood, that are the result of things we do in childhood.

I would love to see gym classes evaluated for activities that stress joints prone to arthritis in later life. Half of what is taught in gym, probably shouldn't be!

This is so stupid!! It seems our kids are just no allowed to be kids anymore!!

Kids have always done stuff that was perhaps a bit too risky and got hurt in the process, boys especially. So?? Do they think banning stuff will stop it?

Are they going to ban Olympics in the future as well? Eventually, the country will ban its citizen to play sports.

I would have to agree with the liability issue but there has to be a better way of doing that maybe they should have them do something else like games at recess.

OH for crying out loud. Maybe they should have each parent sign a liability waiver if they have active kids.

If they are banning unsupervised gymnastic activities, meaning no one is watching, who is going to bust these little acrobats when they start doing there stuff?

Just seems like another form of control - its any wonder our kids are weenies!
