School Bans 'Tag' Game
MCLEAN, Va., April 15 (UPI) - A McLean, Va., school principal said she decided to ban the playground game of tag after it brought out "intense aggression" in students.Principal Robyn Hooker of Kent Gardens Elementary School said in a letter to parents that the game was banned as a safety issue and she hopes to return the popular pastime to the playground after teachers and administrators review their recess policies, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. Some parents welcomed the decision as a needed safety precaution.Gerri Swarm, secretary of the school's Parent-Teacher Association, said the game becomes dangerous once children begin pushing and shoving. "In this day and age, you can't dismiss this as something not to worry about," she said. However, others said the tag ban went too far."We are regulating the fun out of normal childhood activity," "In our effort to be so overprotective, we are not letting children be children." said Jan van Tol, who has a sixth-grade child at the school.
