Bear Under Arrest For Mob Ties
CHATEAU-GONTIER, France, April 17 (UPI) - A bear that once belonged to a Bosnian crime boss was taken to a sanctuary in France after it nearly starved to death.Miljen the bear was taken to its new home in western France after spending eight years trapped at the crime leader's private zoo at a hotel in Bosnia, Der Spiegel reported. The bear's name in Serbian rhymes with "million."The crime boss reportedly bought Miljen in 2000 after hunters killed his mother. When the gangster went to prison in 2005, the majority of his exotic animals were taken to zoos, somehow leaving Miljen behind.Hotel waiter Darko Sevic said he managed to keep the 8-year-old bear alive by feeding him bread and scraps.Miljen was saved after a Siberian filmmaker saw him while working on a film. Animal rights officials had to jump through a series of hoops to get permission for the bear to leave the country, the report said.Locals rallied to plump up the malnourished bear so he could meet health regulations for travel.Miljen arrived in France Wednesday to begin his new life, where he will soon be introduced to two female bears at the Refuge de l'Arche.
