Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has signed into law one of the nation's most sweeping laws against bullying, aimed at protecting all students, including those who are LGBT.

The new law requires state and county school boards to develop policies that ban bullying. It mandates counseling to offered to both the victim and the bully. And it extends not only to school property but also electronic devices, including cell phones, computers or pagers.

The law makes Maryland just the 11th state to protect students from bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation and only the seventh to protect students on the basis of gender identity or expression.

"This is a historic day for Maryland students,” said Kevin Jennings, the Executive Director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

"Feeling safe in school is directly related to academic achievement and student success. This law is an important step in reducing bullying, improving school climate and making school better for all Maryland students.”

Someone please put me out of my misery....

well i wish they would ban,hangovers women sayin i got a headache,the high cost of gas,and fat folks wearing spandex....seems the peoeple in power seem to think if we say it is banned it dissapears,the complete power trip these people are on is unreal.i say we ban that kind of attitude in goverment called brown nose to certain grups to lobby for votes.ohh wait they would ban us from thinkin that way so we don;t win do we..?

This seems like it would be really difficult to enforce.

There are many problems with this one. It would make a little squable among friends into a long drawn out bull fest. Children are going to sometimes disagree and have their fights, but that is very normal in the process of development. Too much could go wrong here.

I agree, I think it would be a very difficult law to put into practise.

To experience bullying is not a very pleasant thing, but I think individuals perceptions of what bullying is are so diverse that it could cause problems. For example, one of my friends claimed she was bullied at school, but I think she was just over sensitive to some remarks that people made. Me, I never classed myself as being bullied when things were said, I never got upset by anyone at all.

Bullies are cruel people and bully others to make themselves feel better. They have low self esteme.

Just because Angry Dad felt his being bullied helped him does not mean that it will help others. Bullies don't do these things to help others, they do it to make others feel bad.

My sister is an educator. She's worked a variety of jobs, the last being a principal at a middle school in a very prestigious school district. Up through that position, she felt like the bully issue was overblown and exaggeration. This year, she decided to shift gears and pursue yet another path in her education career. She's gone back to something close to what she began as. Now, she's in the position of working out of an elementary school, and she's more in touch with the teachers on that level and being able to interact and observe the elementary kids. She told me just last week that she was wrong -- that there is a very huge bullying problem out there that isn't being addressed, and that's it's far more widespread than she'd thought. And it's all being ignored, even by the teachers on duty.

Pretty sad.

I would personally support this law.As it protects the vulnerable sections of the society and also the children and the school students.
