Default Mel Gibson's Dad On Myspace

On Thursday, I told you that Mel Gibson was being lampooned — that’s a nice way of putting it — in Adam Sandler’s new, uh, comedy, "You Don’t Mess With the Zohan." Sandler and his writers used Gibson as a punch line for his anti-Semitic remarks two years ago in Malibu.

This isn’t so great for Gibson, who is trying to re-start his dead-in-the-water Hollywood career with a police thriller called "Edge of Darkness."

Sandler and friends may have ended that before it began, since the former "SNL" star’s audience is 12-year-old boys — the next generation of movie-ticket buyers. Sandler leaves no doubt in their minds that Gibson is a bad guy, a hick and a racist, to be mocked. Talk about reverse propaganda!

But Gibson’s obstacles to starting over don’t end there, and I don’t mean his recent friendship with Britney Spears. I do mean the Web site and MySpace page recently started by his controversial 89-year-old father.

Much has been made of Hutton Gibson, a Holocaust denier, among other things. Gibson has invested what is now more than $30 million in a private church in Malibu. Not recognized by the archdiocese, the 70 or so Holy Family parishioners consider themselves Catholics. They just don’t follow the Roman Catholic Church, the pope or what's known as Vatican II.

Gibson never has refuted his father’s shocking and offensive statements about the Holocaust. He told Diane Sawyer: "He's my father. Gotta leave it alone, Diane. Gotta leave it alone."

And what was the result of leaving it alone? Hutton Gibson now has a MySpace page. Welcome to the 21st century. Not only that: He has a Web page, too.

The MySpace page appears to have gone live on May 26. Since then, Gibson has attracted 68 new "friends," including one in Costa Rica, where his son recently bought a $28 million ranch.

The page carries a picture of Gibson reading what looks like an illustrated Bible. Next to that there’s a description of Gibson as "Defending the Faith of Our Fathers." Underneath that: "Hutton Gibson, Age 89, Pleasant Unity, Pennsylvania."

Default Dead in the Water?

What do you mean, his 'dead in the water' Hollywood career? Do you think if you keep repeating this mantra long enough it will come true? Hardly. The guy has more money and greater success than you will ever achieve in 100 lifetimes. He isn't doing this to reignite a moribund career. Gibson has repeatedly proved that he has what it takes to still crank out top notch films, and his popularity does not appear to have suffered one bit from all the negative publicity he has received from his critics. He's simply starring in this upcoming movie out of love for the profession of acting. He sure as hell doesn't need the money. It's that simple, and mark my words: Like nearly every professional project this man sets his mark upon, the movie will be a success, regardless of your carping criticism. A clear case of very sour grapes. Grapes of wrath?

Sandler's movie and mockery may very well be funny to some people, but Sandler's audiences are very limited, and I for one would never permit 12 year old children to view his very raunchy movies. No, the only individuals who will gloat over his attempts to mock Gibson will be the ones who felt the most slighted by his remarks while he was inebriated - in this case, Jews. Most non-Jews couldn't care less about what Gibson said during a drunken rant and I suspect that many may even agree with him. I suspect that a good many Jews couldn't care less either. I hear tell that Gibson's own bodyguard is an Israeli, so, don't mess with the Zohan.

Your problem is with Mr. Gibson's father and their religious beliefs. That's YOUR problem. Don't try to fob it off on to others who couldn't care less about the subject. And so what if Hutton Gibson 'denies the Holocaust' or 'doubts the Holocaust' or 'questions the Holocaust.' So what! Why do you care? It's his business, or do you imagine that you are in the business of dictating to other people what they should or should not believe? Either believe as you do - or else - is that it?

In a democratic society, people are free to express their opinions on practically every subject under the sun. Sandler has the right to mock Gibson if he and his Jewish writers choose, and Hutton Gibson has a right to question or deny the Holocaust just as you choose to attack his religious beliefs.

Get over it and get on with your own life.

And it is clear from your weird interpretation of traditional Catholicism that you have no idea what you are talking about. The fact of the matter is that the Gibson's DO follow the Roman Catholic Church - the traditional Roman Catholic Church. Their beliefs encompass 2000 years of Catholicism, so it is errant nonsense to claim that they follow anything BUT the Roman Catholic Church.

They simply are not pleased with the innovations launched by the modern Catholic Church since John XXIII and Vatican II - and what person with any degree of insight can blame them? Look at the rotted fruits of Vatican II - with the homosexual pedophilia scandal - but that ugly scenario fits in more with your view of Catholicism, I suspect.

And Gibson is quite right in refusing to denounce his own father. Again, what does it matter what his father believes? I suspect that you have no clear idea as to what the man believes and should not even be voicing a critical opinion on the subject matter. And what if Hutton Gibson's view turns out to be correct in the final analysis? You say that Gibson refused to denounce his father's views on the Holocaust, but what you failed to say is that he did not specifically endorse them either.

You have to get over this 'Joe McCarthy' type mind set you evince. You remember McCarthy, don't you? He's the former U.S. Senator who was uncovering 'communists' in the Hollywood community, etc., while you are intent on following in his footsteps and uncovering 'holocaust deniers' and 'traditional Catholics.'

In my opinion, that constitutes hypocrisy of the rankest sort.

Finally, I think Mr. Gibson Sr will be very grateful to you for publicizing his web site. In fact, I am going to recommend it to others as well.
