FROM BARACK OBAMA'S WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTER:
This weekend kicked off the general election. With the end of the Republican National Convention, only 58 days are left before polls open, and our field operation is off and running. The campaign already has offices in dozens of states, with supporters and volunteers spending time canvassing and phonebanking. This election will be won by the people who invest their time and energy in spreading Barack's message and getting out the vote on November 4.
In Ohio, staff are spread across the state and spent Saturday and Sunday canvassing to identify voters. Voter identification is critical over the next few of weeks, so the campaign can work to target supporters and undecideds. But the only way to do this is with the help of faithful and dedicated volunteers.
Over 20 supporters showed up to the Dayton office in Southeast Ohio yesterday morning to spend the day knocking on doors. Lynn, a researcher for the local college, switched from phonebanking to canvassing. She has been following the campaign since Barack announced his candidacy, but has only recently gotten involved volunteering. She's working to help get people to the polls because she wants others to feel the empowerment of voting.
Maya and Madison are both sophomores at the local Dayton high school and are spending this fall interning with the campaign. After a field organizer visited their school, they signed up to help canvass and phonebank. Even though neither can vote yet, they want to do what they can to be involved in this election. Saturday was their first day canvassing and they can't wait to go back out and knock more doors.
Canvassing is one of the most important aspects of the campaign and it is one of the best ways to meet other supporters and volunteers. It is also a great way to share your story with undecided voters.
In neighborhoods across the country, a lot of voters are still undecided. And while some want to talk about specific issues, such as the economy or healthcare, a lot of people are interested in why others are supporting Barack. Taking the time to share your personal story can help motivate someone to learn more. And getting others interested in the campaign is the first step to getting undecided voters to vote for Barack.
Canvassing is going all in every city, in every state from now until election day. You can visit your local office any day of the week to sign up to canvass.
