This is a sad story about stupid people that do not understand the Bible at all.

The passage with the snake reference never referred to picking up snakes on purpose. It talks about sickness being healed, it talks about protection from danger.

There is even a supporting story in the book of Acts, where Paul is bitten by a deadly snake, and he does not die. Mind you, he did not pick it up!
