Default Chinese Is The New Black

In an effort to gain benefits designed to end White domination in the private sector and undo some of the damaging effects of apartheid, a high court in South Africa has ruled that Chinese South Africans be 'reclassified' as Blacks.According to BBC.com, approximately 200,000 Chinese consider South Africa to be their home. The Chinese Association of South Africa took the government to court, claiming they were being discriminated against. They stated that their members have historically faced widespread oppression and that they have not gained the benefits that Blacks, Indians and "Coloured" people have received since the dissolution of apartheid. This is not the first time the classification of Chinese in South Africa has changed, reports the Wall Street Journal. In the 1940's, the Chinese were classified as "coloured," and by the 1970's with the influx of Taiwanese immigrants, they were given an "honorary white" status. After apartheid was abolished, The Chinese remained in a ”gray area”, says the WSJ. Although this new ruling seeks to protect their civil rights, it only applies to those Chinese who were South African citizens before 1994 (and their descendants), which only accounts for 10,000 - 12,000 people.
