PRIVACY is PRICELESS
I have had several 'tastes' of what fame must be like and it's got it's Pros and Cons . . . more downside than up, in my opinion.
When I was a kid I used to get really miffed by actors, etc. who wouldn't sign autographs or chat with fans on the street. I thought "how crass that they don't want to thank the fans that helped them gain the popularity they now bask in"
Naive, to say the least. I didn't think about having to do that every time they left the house ! And what about when they're sick, pissed off or having a bad day, we all really want to be left alone most of the time.
I'm not famous, not even a little bit, but I've worked on hundreds of movies and my face is plastered all over the net (IMDb, etc.). I was on a date at a restaurant and two young guys approached the table. They asked me if I was "ME". I asked them if they were process servers or bill collectors (pretty crass on my part, Eh ?)
They told me they were making a film and they wanted to pick my brain about a myriad of technical matters. I told them I was on a date and gave them my card, they wouldn't go away, just kept talking and talking until I had to ask them sternly to respect my privacy. I did help them later but they wanted way too much attention and I finally had to pull the plug on them. All in All pretty invasive.
Another time I was at the grocery store. Hung over, unkempt and probably with one sock on. A woman came up to me while I was in the checkout line. She asked me if I was ME and I mumbled "yeah". She got very excited and said "Wait Here !"
She ran out to her car and returned in a moment or two with a DVD of the movie "TRON", which I worked on years ago. She unfolded a big parchment of some kind, peppered with signatures. She explained that she was "a huge fan of the film and was collecting autographs of everyone who worked on it"
That's cool, I thought, I signed and wandered off to my car.
I was told later that that DVD and Autographs Page was sold as a collectible at some auction. I was miffed. It was unpleasant to be accosted at this microscopic level, I cant imagine what it would be like to deal with that kind of invasion of privacy on a large scale, day in and day out, not to mention the Paparazzi aspects.
Famous doesnt seem to be all it's cracked up to be!
Now, rich, that's a whole other story !
